To improve user experience and keep up with modern fintech standards, Cubbi sought to upgrade its outdated Direct Debit payment system — known for its 2–3 business day delays — to an instant, secure, and user-friendly payment method: AutoPay, powered by PayTo.

Overview
My responsibilities include researching the PayTo payment flow, integrating it with Cubbi’s existing architecture, and rolling out a modernized, backward-compatible payment solution using Zai, a third-party payment platform.
Key features
Detailed AutoPay (PayTo) Flow Diagrams: I researched and summarized all the PayTo flows that will be used for the new payment system.
Backward-compatible payment system: I implemented a new payment system that ensures legacy direct debit payment accounts remain functional, while new payment accounts are seamlessly transitioned to the PayTo payment flow.
100% test coverage (unit and integration tests): I ensured 100% unit test coverage for the new payment system and collaborated closely with Zai support to conduct comprehensive end-to-end testing in Cubbi’s staging environment.
What I’ve learned
This project provided deep, real-world experience in modernizing financial systems. To be more specific, I was able to:
Gain insight into how automated real-time payment systems like PayTo work under the hood.
Tackle challenges in transitioning from a legacy payment flow to a modern, contract-driven architecture.
Strengthen my skills in integrating third-party services and working cross-functionally with external teams to fulfill critical business needs.
